ラグビー・ワールドカップ開催の２０１９年に日本に移住し、様々な国際スポーツ大会でミニストリーを展開してきたスポーツ宣教師のマーティ・ウッズさん。一方、メンターとして50人ほどの日本人をメンタリングしてきた。ウッズさんはこのほど自著『A Willing Spirit』の邦訳版『やる気を引き出すメンタリング─人生を変える人の霊とその役割』（リンスコット綾訳、２千200円税込、Fusion Japan）を出版した。
メンタリングとは、メンター（指導者）がメンティー（被育成者）の自発的・自律的な成長を促す人材育成法だ。クリスチャンの場合、メンティーが知識だけでなく、神とつながっている自分の霊の声に耳を傾けることを意味する。ウッズさんは日本でも多くの日本人男性と関わり、メンタリングを通じて彼らの癒やし、回復、成長を促してきた。
クリスチャンホームでなく、父親不在のような家庭で育った。４歳の時、同性の人から性的虐待を受けた。「このことを通して、自分の内面が複雑になっていったのを覚えている」と明かす。だが８歳の時、母親が日曜学校に連れていってくれた。教会には、99匹の羊を背後に、１匹の羊を担いでいる羊飼いの絵が飾ってあった。「この絵を見たときに、この羊を担いでいる羊飼いは、自分の今の気持ちを分かってくれる存在だと一瞬で悟った。その方がイエス様であることを後で知った」
12歳の時、全寮制の学校に入学。そこでロッドという寮長と出会う。彼は、ウッズさんにとって生涯のメンターとなった。「出会った瞬間から、私は彼の目に留まり、愛され、信じてくれているのが分かった。彼はイエスについて語ったが、そのことば以上に、私を教え導く中で神を示してくれた。当時の私は父親像を求めていたのだと分かるが、彼の愛を通して、父なる神の愛を知った。そして、それは私を永遠に変えた。自分が何者であるかを知り、自分という人間を発見した」
ウッズさんは、「私に倣う者となってください」（Ⅰコリント4・16）とパウロが語ったように、「私も彼についていくことによって、イエス様についていくことになった」と話す。「ロッドが他者と関わる姿は、自分にとってはまさにイエスの姿そのものだった。そして、彼のようになりたいと思いながらついていった」
17歳の時、今度はウッズさんがメンターとなった。「寄宿舎の新入生を受け入れた時、ロッドは私に彼らをメンタリングする役割を任せてくれた。その時、私がしたことは、すべて彼が私にしてくれたことだった。すなわち、彼らを見て、話を聞き、自分らしく居ることのできる場所を作り、信じ、応援すること。ここからメンターとしての私の働きが始まった」以後、多くの人々をメンタリングすることになる。
さんは現在、30人の日本人男性をメンタリングしている。日本語で話す人たちをメンターする時は、通訳者を入れてメンターすることもある。メンティー（被育成者）との接点は様々だが、共通点は、みな成長したいという向上心を抱いている点だと言う。「そういう、霊が燃えているような人たちと一緒に歩みたいと願っている」
メンティーには「何か気が合う、心が通じ合う、つながっているように思える人。初めて合うのに、ずっと前から知っているような感じの人が多い」とも話す。「メンティーには、英語を話せない人もいる。私も日本語を話せない。でも会うと、言葉を超えた温かいコミュニケーションが流れているのを感じる時がある。例えば、英語が全くできない日本人男性が『マーティが私の人生を変えてくれた』と言ってくれた。『日本語もできない私が、何で？』。私と神様との関係が、彼に影響を与えていたのだ。それは私ではなく、内なるイエス様があふれ出た結果だ」
安心して話せる場所を設ける
「日本人男性は一般的に、他国の男性に比べ、内面のことを話すのに時間がかかる場合がある」とも話す。「何か深いトピックについて話す時には信頼関係が必要だが、その信頼関係を築いていくスピードは他国の人より少し時間がかかる。でも、一度話したら一気に成長する場合がある」
日本人の若者の場合、ポルノなどの性的問題を抱える人たちをメンタリングする機会がたくさんあったと言う。「肉とのせめぎ合いの中で葛藤している男性が少なくない。だが、〝恥の文化〟もあって、誰かに話すことが難しい。そういう場合は、彼らが安心して話せる場所を設けたり、『これからはこういうふうに歩もう』と、伴走することが必要だ」。ただし、メンティーがメンターに依存しないよう気を配っているという。「両方が依存的になっていないか、常にチェックしている。例えば、メンティーの質問に私が答えるのでなく、『神様はどう思っている？』と言う。このように、神様に目を向けるようにしている」
メンタリングは、日本の宣教にとって効果的な手段の一つだと、ウッズさんは考える。今、メンターを育成するトレーニング、セミナーなども準備中だ。ビジョンは日本に500人の男性のメンターが起こされること。「イエス様は『あらゆる国の人々を弟子としなさい』（マタイ28・19）と言われた。メンタリングは、弟子づくりにとって効果的な手段の一つだ。私はメンタリングが日本宣教を変革する鍵だと、期待している」と語った。
成長願い関わり続ける

『やる気を引き出すメンタリング─人生を変える人の霊とその役割─』出版記念パーティーが９月24日、東京・千代田区のお茶の水クリスチャン・センターで開かれた。
当日は、ウッズさんから直接、間接的にメンタリングの恩恵を受けた５人が証言した。
中上航史さん（ＪＥＣＡ・本郷台キリスト教会員）は７年前、アメリカでウッズさんと出会った。「マーティは、良い時も悪い時も、いつも横にいてくれた。神様の道を歩んでいなくても、自分を変えようとするのでなく、一緒に神様の声を聞く手助けをしてくれた」と証しした。
土方真志さん（チャーチ・オブ・プレイズ・インターナショナル会員）は、２０１９年のメンズキャンプでウッズさんと出会った。「自分の人生にあったことをシンプルにシェアしてくれた。神様に従う姿をマーティが見せてくれた。その証しが私の人生の歯車を大きく動かした『彼の歩んでいるような人生がほしい』と思った」と語った。
広瀬開、賛美夫妻（東京メトロチャーチ国内宣教師）は、ウッズさんのメンタリングを受けた末吉実結（みのり）さん（オーバーフローチャーチ会員）から、メンタリングを受けた。「マーティが実結さんにしてきたメンタリングが、私たちの所にも届いている。今度は私たちがしていくんだろうなと強く感じる出来事だった」と証しした。

“My dorm supervisor's example, showing God more than words, changed me.”
Marty Woods, a sports missionary, moved to Japan in 2019, the year of the Rugby World Cup, and has since ministered at various international sporting events. He has also mentored approximately 50 Japanese people. Woods recently published a Japanese translation of his book, "A Willing Spirit," titled in Japanese as "Motivational Mentoring: The Spirit and Its Role in Changing Lives" (translated by Aya Linscott, 2,200 yen including tax, Fusion Japan).
Mentoring is a human resource development method in which a mentor encourages the mentee's spontaneous and independent growth. For Christians, this means that mentees listen not only to knowledge but also to the voice of their own spirit, which connects them to God. Woods has worked with many Japanese men in Japan, facilitating their healing, recovery, and growth through mentoring.
He grew up in a non-Christian home, often with an absent father. At the age of four, he was sexually abused by a member of the same sex. "I remember my inner self becoming complicated through this," he reveals. But when he was eight, his mother took him to Sunday school. The church had a painting of a shepherd carrying one sheep behind him, with 99 behind him. "When I saw this painting, I instantly knew that this shepherd carrying this sheep understood how I was feeling. I later learned that this person was Jesus."
At age 12, Woods enrolled in boarding school. There, he met Rod, the dorm director, who became his lifelong mentor. "From the moment we met, I knew he noticed me, loved me, and believed in me. He spoke of Jesus, but more than just his words, he showed me God through his teaching and guidance. I realize I was looking for a father figure at the time, but through his love, I learned the love of God the Father. And it changed me forever. I learned who I was and discovered who I was."
Woods says that just as Paul said, "Be imitators of me" (1 Corinthians 4:16), "by following him, I came to follow Jesus." "The way Rod interacted with others was to me the very image of Jesus. And I followed him, wanting to be like him."
At age 17, Woods became his mentor. "When we welcomed the new students into the dorm, Rod entrusted me with the role of mentoring them. Everything I did at that time was exactly what he had done for me: watching them, listening to them, creating a space where they could be themselves, believing in them, and supporting them. This is where my work as a mentor began." Since then, he has mentored many people.
Currently mentors 30 Japanese men. When mentoring Japanese-speaking students, he sometimes uses an interpreter. While his connections with his mentees vary, he says the common thread is that they all have a desire to grow and improve. "I hope to walk alongside people like that, people with a burning spirit."
He also says that his mentees are "people with whom I feel a kindred spirit, a connection, and a mutual understanding. Even though I've never met them before, there are many who feel like I've known them for a long time." "Some of my mentees don't speak English. I don't speak Japanese either. But when we meet, I sometimes feel a warm communication that transcends language. For example, a Japanese man who couldn't speak any English told me, 'Marty changed my life.' I thought, 'How could that happen to me, when I can't even speak Japanese?' It was my relationship with God that influenced him. It wasn't me, but the Jesus within me that overflowed."
Providing a safe space to talk
"Japanese men generally take longer to open up about their inner lives than men from other countries," he adds. "Talking about deep topics requires a relationship of trust, and building that trust can take a little longer than with men from other countries. But once they do, they can grow rapidly."
He says he's had many opportunities to mentor young Japanese men dealing with sexual issues, including pornography. "Many men struggle with the conflict with their flesh. However, due to a culture of shame, it's difficult to talk to someone. In such cases, it's important to provide a safe space for them to talk and to support them, encouraging them to walk this path from now on." However, Woods says he is careful to ensure that mentees do not become dependent on their mentors. "I constantly check to make sure neither party is becoming dependent. For example, instead of answering the mentee's questions, I ask, 'What does God think?' In this way, I encourage them to focus on God."
Woods believes mentoring is an effective tool for missions in Japan. He is currently preparing training and seminars to develop mentors. His vision is to raise up 500 male mentors in Japan. "Jesus said, 'Make disciples of all nations' (Matthew 28:19). Mentoring is an effective tool for disciple-making. I hope that mentoring will be the key to transforming missions in Japan."

Celebrating the Publication of "Motivational Mentoring"
A publication celebration for "Motivational Mentoring: The Life-Changing Spirit and Its Role" was held on September 24th at the Ochanomizu Christian Center in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
Five people who directly or indirectly benefited from Woods' mentoring shared their testimonies.
Koji Nakagami (a member of JECA Hongodai Christian Church) met Woods in the United States seven years ago. "Marty was always there for me, through good times and bad. Even when I wasn't walking God's path, he didn't try to change me, but helped me to listen to God's voice alongside him."
Masashi Hijikata (a member of Church of Praise International) met Woods at a men's camp in 2019. "He simply shared what had happened in his life. Marty showed me what it means to follow God. His testimony really got my life moving, and I thought, 'I want to live a life like his.'"
Kai and Sanmi Hirose (domestic missionaries at Tokyo Metro Church) were mentored by Minori Sueyoshi (members of Overflow Church), who was also mentored by Woods. "The mentoring that Marty has been doing for Miku has now reached us. It made me feel strongly that it's our turn to do the same," she testified.
